Just as your car needs a well-tuned engine to run smoothly, your computer should have a well-tuned operating system, and the difference between what kind of operating system you should choose for your PC can be vast. If you’ve been using Windows for a while now, it might be time to switch over to something else. Luckily there are plenty of options available these days. The best one would probably be Linux based because it is open source and free. Linux is great because you can find the latest software from all over the web without having to spend hours looking through different download sites or demanding that your IT department downloads every possible program that they need from Microsoft themselves. This is why so many people have been switching from Windows to Linux. In this tutorial, we will show you how to install a popular flavor of Linux called Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the most popular operating system from the Linux family because it starts with a user-friendly desktop environment and a rich set of software that you can use out of the box for free. This tutorial is going to assume that you have a working internet connection and have installed the Ubuntu desktop on your PC before. Ubuntu comes in many different types (distributions). In this article we will be using the latest release of Kubuntu (11.10). Kubuntu is a version of Ubuntu that comes with the KDE desktop environment and the ability to use and install kubuntu-restricted-extras, which can provide extra codecs for media players, DVD playback, and other multimedia support. In order to get started, you should go to the official Ubuntu downloads page here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop When you click on the ubuntu download button, you will be presented with a list of everything that is available for download. Select the Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 (Kubuntu) (32-bit) (English recommended). All versions of Ubuntu are available for download here, but Kubuntu is one of the latest versions/flavors. Once the download has finished you should launch the bootable ISO file that you downloaded. This type of file is like an optical disc, which means you will need a DVD/Blu-ray burning software to write it to disk. If your PC does not include one then then you can find free downloadable software for this purpose here, also there are many different ways to convert .ISO image files into an .IMG file, for example 7-Zip and WinImage. Once the disk has been written, you should reboot your computer and wait for it to reboot. After doing so, head back to the Ubuntu download page and scroll down until you reach the section where all of the downloads for Kubuntu can be found. At this point you should select Kubuntu/Kubuntu 11.10 (64-bit) (English recommended). After selecting your version of Kubuntu, you will once again be presented with a list of available downloads. Select the .dmg file for installation. On a Mac, you will need to right click on this file and select “Show Package Contents” from the drop-down menu that appears. cfa1e77820
